The Northview High School Photo Program received its first award of the year. Chelsea Valdez won an Award of Excellence in the PTA Reflections contest. Reflections is a nationwide arts appreciation program sponsored by the national PTA that encourages the exploration of art and its expression and increase community awareness of the importance of art in education. This program recognizes the original artworks and creative talents of elementary through high school students in the artistic areas of photography, literature, musical composition, visual arts, dance choreography, and film production. The theme this year was “Believe, Dream, Inspire” and Ms. Valdez, a senior in AP Studio Art 2D Design, achieved recognition for her photograph entitled "Inspiration".

When I was younger, I was in track and always inspired by amazing athletes to be a better athlete. I always looked up to them. But since I hurt my knee I haven't been able to participate in any sports.

In my picture, I'm trying to show how successful athletes and aspiring quotes, which are put in the background, are inspiring my niece. I wanted to show her dreaming and also believing in herself by looking at the medals.

The California State PTA Reflections Awards honors only 30 students with an Award of Excellence and winners receive the opportunity to attend and showcase their artwork at the California PTA Convention. Competing in the high school division, Ms. Valdez’s photographic image will continue its journey up the chain, representing California PTA at the National level of the Reflections Program.
