FFA: Much More than Agriculture
Posted on 04/04/2014
Congratulations go to eight Covina High School FFA students who recently competed in public speaking contests sponsored by the National Future Farmers of America Organization (FFA). FFA’s intent for this competition was to better prepare students to speak publically about the FFA and the agriculture industry. The purpose of the Public Speaking Event was “to foster and develop the speaking abilities of FFA members as well as develop their self-confidence and contribute to their advancement in inter-personal skill attainment and leadership development”.

On February 27th, CHS students proudly represented C-VUSD in two different speaking contests. Derek Loftin, James Scharton, Ruth Kohie, Claudia Ramirez and Priscilla Preciado competed in the Impromptu Speaking Contest with Ms. Preciado winning 1st place overall. On March 25th, Priscilla will represent Covina at the Southern California Finals for her contest. She is the first student from Covina to make it to the Southern California Finals in many years.

Alexis Martinez, Cesar Garcia and Kayla Smith competed in the Mock Job Interview Contest in which Ms. Smith earned 5th place overall.

Alexis Martinez, a senior at CHS, was selected as a California State finalist for her FFA Proficiency Award in the area of Community Service. She will compete against two other individuals from other areas of the state for the top award. Alexis is the second person from Covina to reach this level in Community Service in 3 years and the third person from Covina in the last 3 years to compete at the state level for a Proficiency Award.

In addition, Alexis Martinez is one of two students from Southern California to be selected to serve at the FFA State Leadership Conference in April on the Nominations Committee. This committee is responsible for running the officer elections and helping to choose what six students will represent our state at the national level. Congratulations to Alexis as she is the first person from Covina to be selected for a committee position in several years.

FFA continues to help the next generation rise up to meet those challenges by helping its members to develop their own unique talents and explore their interests in a broad range of career pathways.
