ywca The accolades continue in C-VUSD! Dr. Catherine Nichols has been selected to receive the prominent distinction and recognition award for “Women of Achievement in the Field of Education: Honoring Passion, Dedication, and Achievement”. This honor is bestowed upon her from the YWCA San Gabriel Valley chapter, an organization that acknowledges the imperative, significant, and influential role that women play in the field of education today and who holds the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility at its core. Dr. Nichols unquestionably reflects these principles as she leads the Covina-Valley Unified School District with the utmost integrity, character, intellect, passion and dedication.

Involved in the educational arena for over 26 years, she has held the respected positions of teacher, principal, director, assistant superintendent and superintendent.  Currently, she leads C-VUSD in her third year as superintendent where she has created and fortified a college-going culture that focuses on “creating extraordinary futures”.  Even in the challenging environment of education today, Dr. Nichols recognizes the importance of continuously evolving learning options and through her remarkable perspective, knowledge and abilities she has been instrumental in creating positive change.  Through her unmatched leadership, vision and guidance, C-VUSD has transformed its educational programs to include four academies to offer unique and diverse opportunities to its students while continuing the tradition of a rigorous and viable curriculum.  Under her excellent leadership C-VUSD has been recognized and publicly praised, both in our county and our state, for increasing student achievement for all students, closing the achievement gap among students and creating a philosophy that directs and supports student success in college and beyond.  Under her leadership two schools have been awarded the title of California Distinguished School and one has been named a Title I Achieving School.  In addition, Fairvalley High School has been recognized as a Model Continuation School.

Dr. Nichols understands and appreciates the symbiotic relationship between schools and their surrounding communities.  She is actively involved in numerous professional clubs and organizations and has effectively connected with the communities that C-VUSD serves.  Instrumental in generating interest and support, she has worked with tireless effort to inform our community of our schools’ and students’ needs.  The passage of Measure CC (Covina Cares), personally formulated, managed and supervised by Dr. Nichols, brought millions of dollars to the district she administers, touching each and every student in an incredibly affirmative way.

This distinguished tribute from the YWCA acknowledges that the key to C-VUSD’s success is directly attributed to the efforts of Dr. Nichols. We wish to thank her for her relentless dedication and outstanding leadership and congratulate her for this tremendous award and extraordinary honor.
