Posted on 11/29/2012

Recently Covina-Valley Unified was recognized as a leader in the State of California for the outstanding progress we are making with our students. Education Trust-West ranks Covina-Valley Unified sixth in the State and second in Los Angeles County for overall performance and closing the achievement gap. The Covina-Valley Unified School District is committed to educational excellence and high achievement for all students.

We have three priorities for our School District: increase student achievement for all students, close the achievement gap among students, and create a four-year college going culture. We are proud of the 22 Advanced Placement (AP) courses we offer and excited about adding Chinese as a world language for our students.

Our innovative academies connect to our students’ talents while preparing them for college and careers. We are purposeful in our efforts to ensure students receive the challenges and support required for individual academic growth. Covina-Valley Unified is tied for sixth in the State of California out of 147 school districts! The District received a letter from Dr. Arun Ramanathan, Executive Director, of the Education Trust-West, highlighting the positive outcomes we are achieving.

Education Trust-West analyzed the achievement of students from 147 districts with a focus on overall performance for every student, closing the achievement gap of students of color and low-income students, and college readiness. Our District was noted for making dramatic improvements in overall grades. Four of seven grades increased for Covina-Valley Unified, including our Latino achievement levels and five-year improvement among students of color and low-income students. There was significant improvement among Latino and low-income students who posted gains of 24 and 22, respectively between 2010 and 2011 on the Academic Performance Index (API.)

Our students are succeeding; they are attending Ivy League colleges as well prestigious private and public colleges. Covina-Valley Unified is creating extraordinary futures!
